OPERA San Antonio Announces 10th Anniversary Season
OPERA San Antonio (OSA) is pleased to announce its 10th Anniversary Season. The 2024/25 Season, “Exploring New Horizons” is sure to be a historic year as we showcase the current and historical context of opera.
We open with the Mariachi Opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, on October 3 and 5, 2024. Producing this show achieves several important "firsts" for OSA: the first Spanish language opera and the first contemporary opera performed on the Tobin Center's H-E-B stage. The opera was commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in 2010 and OSA’s production features the original creative team and many of the original cast members. Cruzar has become a smash sensation, weaving together the powerful story of a Mexican American family divided by borders yet united by heritage. Directed by Broadway Director Leonard Foglia and featuring the nationally acclaimed Mariachi Campanas de America, this opera promises an unforgettable experience where music and story converge in a celebration of familial bonds and enduring traditions.
After celebrating the future of opera and the community of San Antonio with Cruzar, we will present Madama Butterfly in April. This powerful classic is the passionately moving tale of a young Japanese woman's unrequited love for an American sailor. Puccini's lush score is rich with so many memorable moments it has become a beloved favorite with audiences worldwide. With this production OSA achieves another first by collaborating with Austin Opera to produce the show. Butterfly will be directed by OSA General & Artistic Director E. Loren Meeker. OSA Music Director, Francesco Milioto, will conduct The Orchestra San Antonio (TOSA presented by Classical Music Institute) in San Antonio. The cast and creative team will rehearse in San Antonio and perform at the Tobin Center on April 17 & 19, 2025. The production then travels to Austin where three additional performances will be held at the Long Center on April 25, 26, and 27, 2025. The cast and creative team represents the diversity of our city and showcases roles for Asian American singers, designers, and directors. Cultural Advisors and Movement Directors Kevin and Momo Suzuki will guide the production to ensure that the opera is brought to life with cultural sensitivity to the material.
