OPERA San Antonio Brings a Full Production of Amahl and the Night Visitors to Four Community Venues

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Monday, September 25): Today OPERA San Antonio (OSA) is pleased to announce that Amahl and the Night Visitors will be presented throughout San Antonio this December. As part of OSA’s mission to make the arts accessible across San Antonio, this production of Amahl will be presented at four venues in collaboration with Magik Theatre, Alamo Heights Methodist Church, Carver Community Cultural Center, and Edgewood Fine Arts Academy. This production will also include the Classical Music Institute Orchestra.

Amahl is a 45-minute opera composed by Gian Carlo Menotti. The family friendly story takes place on the night the three Wise Men are following a star to Bethlehem. They stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother.

“This ‘Pop-Up Opera,’ that fits in a van, creates the perfect opportunity to bring a full-scale show to community members outside of the downtown area,” said E. Loren Meeker, the Tobin Endowment General & Artistic Director. “The opera explores themes of generosity and faith in a touching and heartwarming way through beautiful music, making it a very accessible production designed for all ages.”

All four venues are first time collaborations for OSA. There will be student dress rehearsals at the Carver and Edgewood. The largest collaboration for this production includes a student matinee and two public performances at Magik Theatre. The final performance will be at Alamo Heights Methodist Church. Each performance includes a full cast, featuring two local young boys as Amahl, Carlos Pigeon and Graham Hansen, plus full sets and costumes.
